97. Shoe - April 19-25, 2015

I made the crack about women and their shoes, well, these are my son Tim's shoes. As he has gone off and joined the Navy, I snuck into his room and took this photo. I tried using my Byro-Snoot but finally went with the flash in bounce mode. D750, 24-70 at 70mm, 1600 iso, f11@ 1/200.

This week I give you a really big shoe. It's not really big, in fact it is quite small. I just wanted to imitate Ed Sullivan. I took one of Erl's fancy walkin' shoes and put it on display. This was another chance to use the Byro-snoot and my Nikon 50mm f 1.4 lens. The shoe was placed on a black background, the Byro-snoot was directly above and a second light shooting through an umbrella was to the left of the camera. Shooting wide open gave me too shallow depth of field so I stopped down to 5.6.
ISO 200, 50mm, f5.6, 1/50 sec, white balance set to Flash.

Some say shoes hanging from a telephone line means that a drug dealer is announcing his presence, I tend to believe it's just a bored, punk kid... or somebody trying to get a WPOTM shot. I need my shoes back.
Sorry for the tardiness. I intended to shoot and send my submission yesterday after my ride to Oceanside, but a guy I was riding with crashed on a descent and ended up in the ditch bloodied and possibly broken... but actually not too bad. I rode down to a nearby fire station and summoned two fire trucks and about 8 firemen and/or paramedics (not much to do yesterday, I guess). Long story short, the guy who crashed (who happens to be the favorite to win the U.S. National Paracycling Championship in May) refused to be sent to a hospital and insisted on finishing the ride... because he wanted a Roberto's Burrito in O-side. Well, we missed the first train back, then the second train we were on was delayed a couple times, soooooooo, I wasn't able to shoot and submit my WPOTM until today. Not all bad... the burrito was excellent!

Kudos for this weeks theme. Shoe, a simple word that can be interpreted in so many different ways. Many possibilities easily came to mind. A dealer’s shoe, a horseshoe, brake shoes, dancing shoes, driving shoes, running shoes, shoe racks, shoe trees, shoeboxes, etc. I wished that I had not used needle nose pliers to pick the the dozens of Cholla balls and barbs off of the shoes I wore for the photos I had sent to all of you a couple of weeks ago, as that would have been a fun photo to shoot and share, but alas that cleanup process was over.
Ultimately I decided to go with the fact that in photography we deal with hot shoes, cold shoes and other ways of triggering additional devices attached to cameras. We even have what I would call smart shoes, as on PocketWizard radio control triggering devices made specifically for Nikon or Canon.
I have five PocketWizard FlexTT5 devices for Nikon cameras and flash systems and I used every one of them to capture this image. Two PocketWizards were connected to the Nikon flash units that were the subjects. One flash unit had a tungsten (orange) filter and one had a florescent (green) filter over the front, and both units were set to their minimum (1/128th) power settings so they were illuminated but the filters weren’t blown away. The third and fourth PocketWizards were attached to flash units that provided the exterior illumination. One in a softbox on the right at full power and the other to the back/left at 1/32nd power providing some edge light. The fifth PocketWizard was attached to the top of my Nikon D3s camera and a Nikon SU-800 was attached to the smart shoe on top of that, controlling everything.
Nikon D3s, tripod mounted, 24-120mm f/4 lens set to 120mm. 1/250th of a second at f/11, ISO 200.

As far as I know, this is the first picture I’ve submitted to the WPOTM in which I used a cell phone. The crazy thing…I’m not even sure why I used it. Maybe it was the closest thing handy when the idea for the photo popped into my head. One of life’s little mysteries.
The theme, of course, was “Shoe.” But I decided to cheat a bit and put two in the picture. The rubber cup at the end of a cane is also called a shoe.
Our story so far…while the D5200 languished in its case, the Motorola Moto X was having all the fun taking the pictures. There would be a reckoning.
