7. Given to Fly - July 28-August 3, 2013
Deron-
I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to pull this one off. I scouted this location, but I had no one to help me and we've had clear skies, so I was afraid I wouldn't get the sunset I wanted.
Low and behold, Southern California gets a low pressure move in and I get the Colorado Mafia move in. The stars must be aligned when you get clouds and kite fliers on a Given to Fly subject weekend!
Mom and Dad showed up just in time to get some dinner, then help me with this shot. Turned out pretty good.
Both are super impressed with everybody's submissions!!!

This topic was a very difficult one. My first choice for the picture didn't pan out. I went with plan "B". I pulled out my dependable GI Joe. He has been with me through thick and thin since I was about 10 years old. He has flown in the past. If you remember, I made a parachute for him and he hung up on the power lines on his maiden flight. He hung there for several years. He was willing to show me how he still could fly. I've included 2 versions. I know we said no photoshop in the weekly photo of the month so I did one with one without.

This theme was difficult for me, though I suspect that you, Deron, had something in mind already. I simply worked off the title, not the lyrics. This turtle is thinking "I can see the sky. If I can climb up this log fast enough I know I can fly and get out of this muck."
Nikon D3s, 200mm lens with 2x teleconverter. Tripod mounted. 1/400th of a second at f/5.6, ISO 200. This turtle frequently climbs up on this log. But I have been waiting for him to come back for 3 days. He finally appeared again today. I took a few shots and then picked up the camera to move closer to the "water" line. But just like that he was gone. Perhaps he flew away?
