215. Skin - July 30-August 5, 2017

After the complicated photo adventure last week I wanted to create something fairly simple. So when contemplating “skin” I thought about various definitions and ways of portraying it, finally settling on the idea that skin was another word for rind or peel, which brought me to fruit, and rough texture, full of dips and pockmarks, like the face of an old man.
I settled on a highly macro shot of an orange. Then to add more primary colors, and to extend the fruit to a few of the many others that have a skin, I added a lime, a lemon and an apple in the background.
Nikon D4s on a Manfrotto a Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 tripod with a Acratech GP ballhead, 105mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor lens, ISO 100, 1/250th of a second (flash sync) at f/40.
One studio flash, with a small softbox positioned above and behind created all the light and maximized the texture. So here is my skin...

As (I hope) you can clearly see, this is a picture of picture an onion and onion skin that has been traced on onion skin paper in order to allow me to render a picture of an onion and onion skin. Or something like that…
The skinny on what I did: Nikon D5200; 18-55mm focused at 19mm; ISO 1250; 1/15 sec. at f/16; aperture mode; matrix metered; auto WB. The camera was hand-held and probably too hastily used.
The rendering was done with marker, chalk pastel, colored pencils and an X-ACTO knife. It is not meant to match the colors, tones and implied textures in the original. Only (again, hopefully) to capture the subject faithfully enough to meet the requirements of this week’s theme. If you feel it doesn’t—everyone’s a critic—my shameless fallback strategy is the use of onion skin paper.

I wanted to get a close up of an extremely freckled red head but either I would have to go on a creepy expedition around the neighborhood or hire a professional model. So I took a photo of my wonderful face to show off my peaches and cream complexion.
The camera was the D5200 where I could flip the LCD around to take the selfie. Light was coming in north facing kitchen window. I perked it up a bit in photoshop. Lens was a 40mm Nikon macro. Exposure was 1/60 @ f16, ISO 3200.

I was attempting to capture this snake the last couple of days. It
has been residing in my garden. Yesterday morning I spotted it,
captured it and put it in a Home Depot bucket to photograph it.
Equipment to photograph was an D810 Nikon with a f/2.8 105mm
Lens. Exposure was 1/400 sec' f/5.6; ISO 1000; Aperture Priority;
Matrix Metering and no flash. The photo was cropped. Color was
adjusted in Camera Raw and then in Photoshop.

As long as I can remember there is a type of skin I have been fascinated with. It is the skin that forms on top of chocolate pudding. My Mom would make chocolate pudding from scratch. When the pudding was eaten while still slightly warm, the biggest difference between skin and pudding was the greatest. The skin seemed to have a concentrated flavor that I was all in favor of.
I made pudding from a box of Jello brand pudding mix. It's good but not quite like Mom's. I tried to show the skin during the maximum difference between skin and pudding. I lit the scene with a softbox on the right side with a byro-snooted light from above and behind.
ISO 200, 1/100 sec, f8, 50mm, both lights were set to -1.0 EV.

This is a Sherrin Kangaroo Brand football. This is the official ball used by the Australian Football League. This guy has seen a lot of action; it has been punched, torpedoed, drop-punted, hand-balled, soccered and banana-kicked. It has seen the sun, night, rain, heat and cold. It has hit the grass, the big sticks, behind posts, asphalt, dirt, gravel and even a few cars. Made from cowhide, the skin of this footy has stood the test of time, while misshapened a bit, this bloke will keep on playing as long as you want it to.
