66. WHAIZZIT? - September 14-20, 2014
Paul-
I have no idea what this thing is. It looks like it could be painted white, shrunken down, and placed on top of a Star Destroyer or Klingon battecruiser for effect…but I’m pretty sure that’s not what it's for. All I can tell you is the plunger-like thingie on top does not press down and (after a requisite 60-second countdown intoned by some dispassionate-sounding woman) vaporize the city. I know because I tried it. I am kinda curious and stupid in that way.
Our story so far…
The author’s guts where churning like an Amish Elder in a butter-making contest. He had eaten something new, exotic, and decidedly unfriendly to his digestive system at the recent Lincoln Asian Community & Cultural Center Festival. So he decided, as he sprinted for the bathroom (again), that brevity counted this week. Olympus E-500; 14-45mm zoom lens (shot at 45mm); 1/400 sec. at f5.6; and ISO 200.

After seeing Paul and Kevin's whaizzits, I'm not sure what to say. Paul's thingamajig might have to do with a septic system, that's my first thought. Some of Kevin's look like photographic equipment, that's the best I can do. So I baffle you with my photo of a whaizzit. It's a medical device used to do dastardly things to small rodents, like help with gall bladder and kidney removal/swapping. My daughter's mouse in the background is oblivious to whats up, so the device must not have a negative aura or bad vibes. Or the mouse is just not too bright. I left the scratches in the plexiglass in the photo, it would be nice to Photoshop them out.
D5200 with 16-85mm at 56mm. Used my SB700 flash in the bounce flash mode, 1/200 second at f16, iso 800.

At first I admit that I was troubled by this theme, as I kept thinking that I had long-ago gotten rid of many things that might cause someone to say WHAIZZIT? But then I started thinking in a macro sense, and in only a slight violation of our general WPOTM guidelines decided that rather than a single image I would create/submit a collage of 9 items. As I lack an actual macro lens, I simply added an extension tube to my 24-70mm Nikkor. All these images were shot in the studio on Thursday morning. All the images were shot with a couple of studio flashes, positioned above and/or below a light table. Nikon D4s, ISO 100, tripod mounted. Shutter speed was 1/250th of a second (flash sync) in each case and the f-stop varied between f/11 and f/22 depending on the item. Some of these items might be pretty easy to identify, others might be quite difficult. So start your guessing, try your best and I’ll let you all know how many you get right. I now LOVE this theme!

I won't give you a clue about size context. Is this a really big thing or a really small thing? You tell me!

For months I, and motorists all over Southern California, have been asking the question, "What is it?" to this behemoth of a building going up along the 57 Freeway in Anaheim. After a little research I found it is... Oh, never mind.
(If you search this building on your Googler, I think you'll find there aren't any pictures of it lit up. FIRST!)
