11. Labyrinth - August 25-31, 2013
Byron-
I debated what route to take on this photo project. I think this is the best example of a labyrinth that I could come up with. You could also call it an extreme close up. It is my thumb print.
If you are interested in the technicals- I used my 55mm Micro-Nikkor lens attached to a Nikon bellows. That allowed me to get a closeup of the thumb print. The exposure was f8 at 1.6 seconds. The lighting was nothing special. I shot it on my Kitchen counter. The thumb print is on a piece of glass with a sheet of white paper behind the glass to provide a plain background.

Deron-
I was getting ready to run around the block, as sometimes I find fascinating webs in the trees, but I couldn't turn down this little lady, who was right in my back yard. While Black Widows are not known for their well defined webs, the female Latrodectus IS known for devouring the male after mating... I hope he got dinner and a movie before his demise.

Kevin-
Wow, Labyrinth was a difficult subject for me. I know that in a strict sense a labyrinth is not the same as a maze. But in common usage for people like me (who don't have a masters degree in library science) the two terms are at least connected. I played around with trying to associate the photo with the movie Labyrinth, which starred David Bowie and a bunch of muppet type characters, but I couldn't get Miss Piggy out of my head. I also visited the maze at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and there I got doused with water repeatedly as the sprinklers were running but didn't capture any images that were worth sharing. And it's too early by a few weeks for corn mazes. Finally I decided to use the studio space that I am renting again and built some kind of cross between a labyrinth and a maze out of Lego pieces, then created some good backlight. etc. I like the limited depth of field, but now wish I had limited it even further. The photo isn't much, but it feels like all I could do with that topic. I can't wait to see everyone else's images as I am sure there will be much stronger interpretations!

Agreeing with Kevin that a labyrinth, for all intents and purposes, can be a maze, I decided on a research laboratory theme. You know the one: The mouse at one end of the maze and the cheese at the other. I just changed an element for the sake of a slightly different interpretation.
Thanks goodness for my copy stand. I usually use it for macrophotography, but I commissioned it for a different purpose (and direction) for this shot.
Clearly, I am no master of lighting and that's no bull...or, rather, Minotaur, considering this week's theme.
And, yes, the cheese stands alone.
