25. Grain - December 1-7, 2013
Byron-
The grain I photographed was wood grain. You can use your imagination to see all kinds of things in wood grain. In my submission you can see an "M" or you might see a bat in flight or maybe a spider walking toward you. I prefer clear wood grain as opposed to the naughty, whoops I mean knotty type.
This was shot at ISO 200, f/4 at 1/5 second.

Paul-
“Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.” – George Eliot
The nine layers of grain, starting from the top of the glass container: 1) Hulled millet; 2) Barley flour; 3) Short grained brown rice: 4) Yellow popcorn; 5) Hulled barley; 6) Cracked wheat bulgur; 7) Black quinoa; 8) Rye flakes; and 9) Rolled wheat.
The usual suspects: Olympus E500; 14.0mm-45.0mm f4.5 zoom lens set a 22mm; 1/50 sec. at f4.0; bracketed; ISO 400; no flash; one light flanks the bottle on each side; tripod used.

Kevin-
Okay, so the theme this week is GRAIN. There were so may way of interpreting this, whether it was through the grain pattern in wood, or film grain from Tri-X push-processed to ASA (ISO to you younger people) 1600 or so, or perhaps grains of sand. Then there are the various cereal type grains. So I could have submitted shots of barley/oat/poppy/lentil/etc but decided to simply go with my favorite grain which is corn (unless you believe that corn is a fruit or a vegetable instead of a grain). And while corn on the cob is wonderful, winter is far from the appropriate season for it. But it's always the season for my other favorite form of corn, which is popcorn while enjoying a movie!
This shot was taken with my D3s set to ISO 1600, tripod mounted, 1/40th of a second at f/2.8 with my 24-70mm Nikkor zoomed to 56mm. The movie playing on the TV screen in the background is the first The Hunger Games film.

Deron-
This photo just screams Barnesville to me... I guess that's why I like it.
I didn't choose an actual grain for my 'Grain'. I chose the place where Paul's nine grains go before they are stacked in a fancy jar. I chose the place where Kevin's grain goes before it is super-heated and placed in a colorful box. Since my photo is of a feed plant, I guess you could say, I chose the place where my last week's submission's dinner goes before it gets consumed.
I tried shooting quite a few different shots with an ISO of 1600 to get that grainy look, but apparently I switched it back to 200 when I shot this one.
